Canadian Premier League Appoints Laura Armstrong as New Head of Communications

Toronto, ON – (May 5, 2022) – The Canadian Premier League (CPL) and Canadian Soccer Business (CSB) announced Thursday the appointment of Laura Armstrong to the league’s leadership team, as Senior Director, Communications.

“Laura is a passionate champion for soccer in Canada. She brings invaluable experience to our team that will help drive further growth and engagement for our league and commercial properties,” said Glen Johnson, Executive Vice President, CPL and CSB. “As we build on the momentum of this exciting new era for soccer in Canada, Laura’s creative ideas, insightful perspectives and commitment to storytelling will be a huge benefit to our clubs, partners and supporters across the country. Our warmest welcome to Laura. We’re thrilled to have her aboard.”

Armstrong became one of the foremost voices in Canadian soccer media over nearly eight years as a reporter with the Toronto Star, where she covered the growth of the women’s and men’s games in the country at the professional and international levels. She has engaged audiences by reporting on some of Canada’s biggest sports stories in recent years, including Toronto FC’s three MLS Cup appearances since 2016, the Toronto Raptors’ run to an NBA championship in 2019, the Canadian women’s soccer team’s gold-medal performance at the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics and the Canadian men’s soccer team’s recent successful CONCACAF World Cup qualifying campaign, on the Road to Qatar. She has featured as an analyst on Sportsnet and OneSoccer, where she covered the CPL’s Island Games in 2020.

Armstrong will take her communication skills behind the scenes as the CPL’s Senior Director of Communications, where she will continue to help shape the story of soccer and the league in Canada by overseeing corporate communications, publicity, domestic and international media and influencer relations. She will work closely with Kristian Jack, Vice President of Media and Content, to cover the world’s most popular sport like no one else in Canada.

“I am impressed by the work and commitment the Canadian Premier League and Canadian Soccer Business have put into growing soccer in our country,” said Armstrong. “As a life-long fan of the game, it is an honour to begin this new journey among peers who see, and believe in, soccer’s potential. I look forward to building on what is already a great foundation and a bright future for the sport in Canada.”
