CanMNT to play USA in Concacaf Nations League Final after win vs. Panama

The Canadian men’s national team will play for its first trophy in 23 years on Sunday evening.

After beating Panama in the Concacaf Nations League semifinal 2-0 on Thursday night at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Canada have advanced to the final and will take on the United States on Sunday, June 18.

Jonathan David scored in the first half for Canada to put Les Rouges in the lead, but the Canadians didn’t feel very secure until Alphonso Davies — entering several minutes prior as a substitute — scored an outrageous near-post shot inside the box to make it 2-0.

Panama’s Eric Davis was ejected with a red card just moments before the 90 minutes were up, leaving the Panamanians down two goals and one man in stoppage time.

From there, the Canadians managed the game to see out a well-earned victory over Panama and secure their spot in the Final.

Canada will now turn their attention to longtime foes the U.S., who they last met in January 2022 in World Cup Qualifying — a 2-0 win for Canada at Hamilton’s Tim Hortons Field.

The Americans advanced to the Final by defeating bitter rivals Mexico in the second semifinal, winning 3-0 thanks to a pair of goals from Christian Pulisic and one from Ricardo Pepi. However, their passage to the Final was not without cost: midfielder Weston McKennie and defender Sergiño Dest were both sent off in the second half, meaning they’ll be suspended for the clash with Canada.

The USA are the defending champions of the tournament, having beaten Mexico 3-2 in extra time in the 2021 Final. Canada will bid to be the second team ever to win this competition on Sunday.

The Concacaf Nations League Final is available to stream on OneSoccer, as well as fuboTV and TELUS channel 980, kicking off at 8:30 p.m. ET/5:30 p.m. PT.
