The Canadian men’s national team was unable to secure its qualification to the 2024 Copa América on Tuesday night against Jamaica, but it will have another opportunity to book a ticket to the tournament by means of a one-off play-in match against Trinidad and Tobago on March 23, 2024.
The match will be held in Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas, with the winner going directly to the Copa América to be played that summer across the United States.
Canada’s aggregate loss to Jamaica in the Concacaf Nations League quarter-final this week meant they missed their first opportunity to qualify for the prestigious tournament, but their dreams of testing themselves against the likes of Brazil or Argentina in a major tournament remain alive.
They’ll be looking to join Jamaica, as well as the United States, Mexico, Panama and the 10 CONMEBOL teams, at the Copa América tournament. So, too, will Costa Rica and Honduras, who will play in the other qualification playoff after they both also lost their Nations League quarter-final ties.
Trinidad and Tobago lost 4-2 on aggregate to the United States this week, although they won the second leg 2-1 at home in an impressive performance. The Soca Warriors, led since 2021 by head coach Angus Eve, sit 99th in the latest FIFA World Rankings, below Canada in 45th. They came second in Group A in the 2023-24 Nations League group stage behind Panama, defeating the likes of Curaçao, El Salvador and Guatemala in the process.
The Trinidadian team also features some familiar faces to Canadian soccer fans, with their latest squad including a pair of Canadian Premier League players in Halifax Wanderers FC captain Andre Rampersad and Atlético Ottawa striker Malcolm Shaw.
Canada last played Trinidad and Tobago in 2012, in a friendly that the Canadians won 2-0. Historically, Canada have a 7-2-2 record against the Soca Warriors.
