Marsch names first CanMNT squad; Former CPLer Zator in mix for friendlies vs. France, Netherlands

On Monday morning Jesse Marsch revealed his first squad as the new manager of the Canadian men’s national team.

The group includes 26 players for what will be a significant pair of tests for Canada. They take on the Netherlands, currently ranked seventh by FIFA, on June 6 and second-ranked France on June 9 in a pair of international friendlies in those respective countries. Both matches will be available live on OneSoccer.

Marsch’s squad is headlined by the usual star power, including Bayern Munich’s Alphonso Davies, Lille’s Jonathan David, Inter Milan’s Tajon Buchanan and Porto’s Stephen Eustáquio.

Included in the group is former Cavalry FC and York United defender Dominick Zator, who is being called up for the first time since receiving his first two caps for Canada during the 2023 Concacaf Gold Cup.

Zator has spent the past two seasons playing for Korona Kielce in the Polish top flight. The 29-year-old appeared in all 34 matches for the club this season, playing primarily as a right fullback as Korona Kielce survived relegation by a single point.

There are a few other notable changes from the group called up by Mauro Biello which defeated Trinidad and Tobago back on March 23 to qualify for Copa América. Richie Laryea, Kyle Hiebert, Charles-Andreas Brym, Junior Hoilett and Tom McGill are all back with the group, while U-20 national team goalkeeper Grégoire Swiderski has been called up as a training player.

These matches will serve as critical preparation for Canada’s 2024 Copa América campaign, as they get set to face defending World Cup winners Argentina and Lionel Messi on June 20. Canada’s group also includes Peru and Chile.
