Canada’s 2024 secondary transfer window officially opened on Friday, following an update to the dates of the men’s professional transfer calendar, announced by Canada Soccer on Thursday night.
The 2024 secondary transfer window opened on Friday, July 12 and will run through Thursday, August 8. Canada Soccer, the national governing body for the sport in the country, oversees the timing of the annual men’s professional transfer windows as part of its regulatory oversight responsibilities.
Canadian Premier League (CPL) clubs Pacific FC, Cavalry FC and Halifax Wanderers FC have already announced signings that are expected to debut following the opening of the secondary transfer window, pending the receipt of their International Transfer Certificates (ITC).
The Wanderers signed 17-year-old standout Tavio Ciccarelli to an Exceptional Young Talent contract in late May. The native of Winnipeg, Manitoba spent the last two seasons at Sheffield United, featuring for the club’s U-18 and U-21 teams, and this week earned a call up to Canada’s squad for the men’s 2024 U-20 Concacaf Championship.
“Tavio is coming here with a lot of energy and ability along with being driven and hungry to succeed,” Wanderers head coach Patrice Gheisar said in May. “He’s an exciting young player and we have a great group in regards to helping young players, so we think he’s a player we can help grow and he can bring something to the team as well.”
The Tridents announced the addition of Marco Dominguez in late June. The Canadian-born defensive midfielder most recently represented C.S.D. Municipal, based in Guatemala City, in Liga Nacional, the top tier of Guatemalan soccer. Internationally, Domínguez represents Guatemala’s Men’s National Team.
“Marco will be a significant addition to the squad, not only does he possess high quality football ability on the pitch, but he also demonstrates great character, leadership, and understands what it takes to win,” Jamar Dixon, Manager of Football and Player Development at Pacific FC, said at the time. “He’s a player that will bring positive energy to the locker room and will share his experience with his teammates.”
Cavalry, meanwhile, will add the attacking prowess of forward Nicolas Wähling to its side, a signing which was announced on July 5.
“Nicolas is a very powerful and direct winger, who is strong at running with the ball and has a good history of scoring or creating goals,” said Tommy Wheeldon Jr., Head Coach and General Manager of Cavalry FC. “He comes from a very good footballing background and brings us another attacking dimension.”
