Eight players to watch at the 2024 League1 Canada Women’s Inter-Provincial Championship

The 2024 iteration of the Women’s Inter-Provincial Championship will bring together players from four League1 Canada provinces, who will battle to be crowned champions of the women’s Pro-Am game in Canada.

There will be no shortage of talent on display as Whitecaps FC Girls Elite, Calgary Blizzard, NDC Ontario and CS Mont-Royal Outremont, the champions of their respective provincial leagues, put their best foot forward over the four-game competition, which will be held on Friday, Aug. 9 and Sunday, Aug. 11 at Tim Hortons Field in Hamilton, Ont.

Get to know just a few of the standout names who will look to make an impact at the Women’s Inter-Provincial Championship this weekend:

Jeneva Hernandez Gray

Midfielder, Whitecaps FC Girls Elite

Leading the way for Whitecaps FC Girls Elite is Hernandez Gray, a creative two-way midfielder who earned a call-up to the Canadian women’s senior national team in November at just 17 years old. She was named League1 BC’s Top Midfielder, Young Player of the Year, and Player of the Year this past season, and is expected to represent the country at the upcoming 2024 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Colombia.

Aislin Phillips

Attacker, Calgary Blizzard

Phillips tied for the scoring lead for the Blizzard this season, netting four goals in 10 games. That included a brace in a 3-2 win against Callies United Women, where she scored two goals in eight minutes to earn the Blizzard a come-from-behind win. Phillips is able to both create plays and score for her teammates and is a player that other teams will be looking to mark heavily.

Teegan Melenhorst

Midfielder, NDC Ontario

One of the key players that helped NDC Ontario to a near-perfect League1 Ontario season in 2024 was Melenhorst, a midfielder who scored five goals during the regular season and is a member of Canada’s U-17 national team. She scored in two of NDC Ontario’s final four games of the season, including the finale against North Mississauga. Melenhorst will be relied on for goal scoring and play making for NDC Ontario as the club looks to secure a home victory in its Women’s Inter-Provincial Championship debut.

Shayla He

Attacker, CS Mont-Royal Outremont

He is one of CS Mont-Royal Outremont’s best attacking assets. She boasts a high-level understanding of the game and can change the flow and tempo of attack thanks to her technical and tactical abilities. She stands out for her ability to take on defenders one-on-one with her elite skills on the ball. He scored two goals in the playoffs for CS Mont-Royal Outremont this season.

Kaylee Hunter

Striker, Whitecaps FC Girls Elite

Hunter is a natural striker and former Calgary Blizzard player, who will face her former squad in the semifinal round in Hamilton on Friday. Hunter netted three goals between the 2023 and 2024 League1 BC championship finals, and has already scored eight goals and added six assists in just six matches for Canada’s U-17 national team.

Hunter and teammate Hernandez Gray each contributed eight goals for Whitecaps FC Girls Elite in League1 BC play this season. They go into the Women’s Inter-Provincial Championship on a hot streak, having combined for six goals in the team’s last five games.

Lauren Houghton

Goalkeeper, Calgary Blizzard

Houghton played a significant role in getting the Blizzard to Hamilton for its Women’s Inter-Provincial Championship debut. In a winner-takes-all penalty shootout against the St. Albert Impact to wrap up League1 Alberta’s inaugural season, Houghton not only saved the opponent’s final shot but also scored herself. She is expected to be a wall in net once again this weekend, aiding her Blizzard teammates as the squad’s last line of defence.

Noelle Henning

Goalkeeper, NDC Ontario

Henning recorded four shutouts in the regular season for NDC Ontario, helping the team post a strong defensive record and concede just 17 goals in 18 games. Henning has represented Canada at the U-15, U-17 and U-20 levels and will be looking to keep as many clean sheets as possible during the Inter-Provincial Championships.

Léa Palacio-Tellier

Goalkeeper, CS Mont-Royal Outremont

Palacio-Tellier, who serves as CS Mont-Royal Outremont’s captain, has been a member of the club since the age of 13. She is looked to by both her coaches and teammates as a leader on the field, and will be tasked with making crucial saves for the team, as she did throughout the Ligue1 Québec playoffs and in the final against CF Montréal, when CS Mont-Royal Outremont won the provincial title out of the fourth seed.
