Gatorade Team of the Week (Week 18)

The Gatorade Team of the Week for the eighteenth week of Canadian Premier League action in 2024, brought to you by Kristian Jack and OneSoccer’s Oliver Platt.

TOTW — Week 18

Goalkeeper

Thomas Vincensini (York United)

The York goalkeeper was superb as he picked up his third clean sheet of the season in a 1-0 victory over Valour on Sunday night. He made three saves, including denying Shaan Hundal from the penalty spot, made three clearances, and also played a key role in launching the counterattack which led to York’s goal.

Defenders

Fraser Aird (Cavalry FC)

Aird was an absolute threat from wide areas again for Cavalry, setting up Klomp’s match-winner with an outstanding curling ball into the box. He created five chances on eight crosses, and also played a key role in Cavalry’s second goal as well.

Noah Abatneh (York United)

The young central defender put in a composed and quality performance on Sunday in Winnipeg, cutting out multiple transitional opportunities for Valour. He made two interceptions, won three of five duels and completed 54 of 63 passes.

Daan Klomp (Cavalry FC)

The reigning CPL Player of the Year had a performance to remember, on his 26th birthday no less, with a brace against the Halifax Wanderers on Saturday. He also made four clearances and completed 54 of 60 passes.

James Cameron (Vancouver FC)

The 19-year-old fullback put in a strong shift in his side’s Salish Sea Derby victory on Sunday. Defending down the left flank, he contested a stunning 19 duels, winning possession nine times, winning four tackles and making two interceptions.

Midfielders

Josué Martínez (York United)

Martínez put in a strong shift in the centre of the park for the Nine Stripes against Valour on Sunday. He was crucial in breaking lines and maintaining his side’s tempo, completing 60 of 69 passes, including 24 in the final third.

Alessandro Hojabrpour (Forge FC)

Hojabrpour played a stunning ball over the top to Elimane Cissé, earning an assist as Forge cruised to victory against Atlético Ottawa on Saturday night. He also won possession four times and won three tackles, during a quality outing at the base of the Forge midfield.

Kyle Bekker (Forge FC)

The Forge captain has been the somewhat quiet catalyst behind their improved form for weeks now, and that was the case again on Saturday against Ottawa. His on-ball ability to maintain tempo for the Hamilton side was clear as he created two chances, and made 20 passes in the final third, completing 89.7 per cent of his overall passes.

Forwards

Ali Musse (Cavalry FC)

After scoring a brace last weekend, Musse turned provider on Saturday against Halifax, sending in a lovely corner kick when Daan Klomp headed home for the opener. He had two shots of his own on six touches in the box, and created two chances — very much looking like the Ali Musse who won the 2023 CPL Players’ Player of the Year award.

Tristan Borges (Forge FC)

Borges came out firing on Saturday, hitting the woodwork inside nine minutes — before scoring a brace himself to propel Forge to a 3-0 victory. He had five shots in total, he was perhaps unlucky to not get his second career CPL hat trick, for what was a dominant outing in which he also created two chances.

Alejandro Díaz (Vancouver FC)

The Vancouver striker scored his fifth goal in the past seven games to hand the Eagles a crucial 1-0 victory over rivals Pacific FC in Sunday’s Salish Sea Derby. He now has eight goals on the season, which is tied for second in the Canadian Premier League.
