Wanderers sign Tiago Coimbra to contract extension
Halifax Wanderers

The Halifax Wanderers have signed Canadian forward Tiago Coimbra to a contract extension through the 2026 Canadian Premier League season with club options for 2027 and 2028.

“It’s exciting to be signing a long-term deal with Halifax and means a lot to me that the club is thinking about me after my final U-21 season and want me to be here past next season,” Coimbra said. “I’m excited to get more experience here in the CPL, which has seen some great players put the league on the map like Kwasi (Poku) and (Joel) Waterman, and my goal is to do the same, take the next step and one day earn my first call-up to the Canadian national team.”

Coimbra, 20, is entering his third season as a Wanderer after signing with the club in December of 2022. The striker from Vancouver, BC, has seven goals and two assists over his first two seasons in Halifax. Coimbra was also third among all CPL players in non-penalty goals per 90 minutes in 2024.

“We’re thrilled to extend our agreement with Tiago after two promising years here in Halifax,” sporting director Matt Fegan said. “Tiago is a player who echoes our club’s emphasis on work-rate and he connects with the fans with his tireless tenacity. We believe Tiago has a big future in the game and that he is a tremendously valuable asset to the club. We’re delighted he has committed to continuing his development with the Wanderers and we are fully committed to helping him develop ”

Born in Brazil, Coimbra moved to Vancouver, B.C. when he was nine and spent time playing with local club Faly Academy. In 2021, he joined Brazilian powerhouse Palmeiras, where he played for the club’s U-17 and U-20 teams alongside several top Brazilian prospects, including Endrick (currently at Real Madrid).

Coimbra has also played for the Canadian U-20 national team, scoring once during the 2022 Concacaf men’s Under-20 Championship.

“Tiago’s impressive physical and technical characteristics are the perfect combination for our system, and we’re excited to have his intensity, confidence and commitment on the pitch again next season,” Wanderers head coach Patrice Gheisar said. “At a young age, he’s already one of the best finishers in the league and has very high potential. We’re committed to seeing him make a continued impact on our team.”

For the 2025 season, Coimbra has received permission from the club to change his jersey number from no. 19 to no. 9.
