Cavalry FC captain Nik Ledgerwood, the first Canadian player who was ever really associated with the Canadian Premier League, found the back of the net against Forge FC with the opening goal of the game.

It was a well-placed effort, with the 34-year-old defensive midfielder pausing his run perfectly to beat Forge’s offside trap and get on the end of a well-timed pass by Elijah Adekugbe.

Sure, it was a nice goal. But, Ledgerwood’s follow up effort (seen in the video, above) was the real head-turner.

We’re not quite sure what his goal celebration was – it looked like one of those inflatable arm-flailing mascots you see in front of auto dealerships – so CanPL.ca’s Nolan Kangas, on location at Tim Hortons Field, tried to pry out an explanation from the Cavs’ captain … to no avail.

“Yeah, it’s just a little insider with the boys,” Ledgerwood offered, with a hearty laugh. “We had some fun with it over the pre-season (in Punta Cana) and it was just the first thing that popped into my head. I won’t go into too much details, but, you know, it was just to have a little laugh with all the boys. That was the reason behind it.”

So, was it pre-planned, then?

“No, no, no, no, it was not pre-planned. If I could pre-plan a goal, then I would,” Ledgerwood joked. “That’s not usually my forte. It was just spontaneous.”

He added: “But … I’ll keep it to myself and the boys. It’s a good little inside joke, but it’s just for us.”

And that was that.
