HIGHLIGHTS: York9 clinches 3rd in Fall season as Telfer nets brace

York9 FC are on a roll.

Fresh off a 4-0 thrashing of their 905 Derby rivals last weekend, the Nine Stripes made it two clean sheets in a row by earning another 4-0 win, this time against Valour FC, on a chilly Wednesday night at IG Field in Winnipeg.

TFC loanee Ryan Telfer put in a man-of-the-match effort, scoring a second-half brace for the visitors to spoil Valour’s regular season home finale. With the win, Y9 clinched third place in the Fall season.

Jimmy Brennan’s team took the season series against Valour, with three wins and a loss.

Y9’s Simon Adjei nearly opened the scoring in the early minutes, forcing a brilliant stop by Valour goalkeeper Tyson Farago off a dangerous cross played into the box by Diyaeddine Abzi. Other than that, it was a pretty uneventful first half, with neither team imposing their will on the game.

An injured Manny Aparicio was subbed out at the start of the second half for Y9, who took the lead in the 48th minute off the counter. Telfer came streaking down the left flank and wasn’t closed down by Valour defender Skylar Thomas, and he took full advantage by ripping a shot from inside the box past Farago at the near-post.

The Nine Stripes doubled their advantage a few minutes later as Joseph Di Chiara converted from the penalty spot after Kyle Porter was hauled down inside the box.

Y9 added a third goal late in the game off a Valour turnover deep inside their half. Abzi floated a great ball into the box, and Telfer out-jumped a Valour defender to nod it past a helpless Farago.

Adjei completed the rout in the last minute of regulation time, scoring on a half-volley off a setup from Steven Furlano.

York9 hosts HFX Wanders FC in their season finale on Saturday (1:30 p.m. ET, 2:30 p.m. AT), while Valour closes out the campaign on the same day at Pacific FC (3:30 p.m. PT, 6:30 p.m. ET, on OneSoccer).

Three Key Performers

Ryan Telfer (York9 FC)

Scored the opening goal via a brilliant solo effort, and then added a second off a majestic header. Caused plenty of problems for Valour’s defence as the main reference point of York’s attack.

Diyaeddine Abzi (York9 FC)

Had a few heavy touches and crosses on the night, but he linked up well with Telfer, delivering a great cross for the Trinidadian international on his second goal.

Tyson Farago (Valour FC)

Stood tall between the posts and made some key saves that prevented the game from totally slipping away from the home side.
