Wednesday’s OneSoccer Player & Pundit Hangout session featured former Canadian national team member Terry Dunfield.
In talking to OneSoccer hosts Kurt Larson, Oliver Platt and Adam Jenkins, Dunfield chatted about his time playing for Canada, scoring one goal in 14 appearances from 2010 to 2015.
Dunfield explained what it was like to be on the bench during Canada’s infamous 8-1 road loss to Honduras in 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifying.
“That was a tough moment. We put so much into that (qualifying) campaign. Everybody was in the peak of their career. That was a tough one to swallow,” Dunfield admitted.
“I’ll never forget the moment looking around the airport coming back, we were soul-less. We were just all walking around like zombies. Nobody knew where to go next. It took time to get over it.”
Dunfield recalled how he joined the Manchester City youth academy at age 14, and how he fell out of favour with Blues coach Kevin Keegan over a lack of playing time, which led to him joining Bury FC in 2020.
“I thought I was ready to play week-in, week-out (for Manchester City), and that I knew everything,” Dunfield recounted.
Other topics discussed on OneSoccer’s Player & Pundit Hangout with Dunfield included how he’s dealing with this period of self-isolation, his playing days with Toronto FC and the Vancouver Whitecaps in MLS, and much more.
