Gold Cup: Canada draws Mexico, Cuba, Martinique in Group A

Canada has drawn Mexico, Cuba and Martinique in the group stage of the 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup.

Les Rouges was drawn into Group A on Wednesday at CONCACAF’s group and schedule unveiling live from Los Angeles, Calif.

“Following a strong showing in Concacaf Nations League Qualifying, we need these tougher tests now,” said Canada coach John Herdman. “The Concacaf Gold Cup will be important for our preparations for FIFA World Cup Qualifiers.”

Canada opens the tournament on June 15 against Martinique at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena.

It then meets Mexico in Denver, Colo. on June 19 before wrapping the group stage in Charlotte against Cuba four days later.

“We have a talented group, but now they will be fully tested in a tournament setting,” added Herdman. “The team are motivated to do well for Canada.”

The expanded 2019 Gold Cup will feature 16 teams drawn across four groups.

Group B: Costa Rica, Haiti, Nicaragua, Bermuda

Group C: Honduras, Jamaica, El Salvador, Curacao

Group D: United States, Panama, Trinidad & Tobago, Guyana

The winner of Canada’s Group A will advance to meet the runner-up in Group B while the runner-up in Group A will advance to meet the winner of Group B in the tournament’s quarterfinals.

Canada qualified for both the 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup and 2019-20 CONCACAF Nations League by finishing second in the qualification stage with a perfect 4-0-0 record.

Canada’s Gold Cup meeting with Cuba will also be a preview of a CONCACAF Nations League A clash between the two nations later this year.
