TORONTO — Representatives from seven Canadian Premier League clubs and the Canadian Soccer Association joined CPL executives in downtown Toronto this week for three days of League Meetings, intended to pave the way for a series of momentous dates and processes that will unfold in the coming weeks and months.

James Easton, the CPL’s VP of Soccer Operations, says representatives from the league’s founding clubs emerged from Thursday’s talks with a clearer picture of league structures, including roster building.

“It was really the first chance we’ve had to sit down in a room with all of our coaches and talk about this league — the purpose of this league, where we want to go, where we are now and the type of players we want to attract,” Easton told CanPL.ca.

“We took in a lot of information and shared a lot of ideas and thoughts,” Easton added. “We’re going to go back, consider it and convert those ideas into actionable items and get back to the clubs with the things we think we need to do going forward.

“We’ll be getting together again in September to go over some of these items again and keep everyone involved moving forward.”

Agenda items for the three-day coaches summit included club licensing requirements, CPL officiating and an introduction to scheduling and preseason arrangements.

The final day of League Meetings included presentations that touched upon league rules and the on-boarding of players.

Coaches also were introduced to future mechanisms by which they’ll have the option of adding to their rosters.

Each of the league’s seven confirmed clubs — HFX Wanderers FC, Forge FC, York 9 FC, Valour FC, Cavalry FC, FC Edmonton and Pacific FC — are currently accepting membership deposits ahead of the CPL’s inaugural 2019 season.
