The football calendar around the world continues to roll on, and a handful of Canadian Premier League players have been right in the thick of it.

With eight CPLers out on loan to various sides across Europe and Central America, there’s been a lot to keep track of since our last update.

Not every CPLer in Europe has played yet, but a few have at least begun making their way onto the benches of their loan clubs.

Here’s how the past week went for the players currently scattered across the world.

Easton Ongaro (FC Edmonton) — Vendsyssel FF (Denmark)

The Eddies’ big striker started his second game in a row for Vendsyssel on Sunday, making his debut in the Danish second tier. He went 85 minutes in the 1-1 draw versus FC Fredericia, and he earned some praise for his hold-up play. According to the club’s own match report, Ongaro was involved in a penalty shout at around the 25-minute mark when he was knocked from behind in the box, but he didn’t get the call.

Vendsyssel, now ninth in the league, play again on Wednesday against Skive.

Michael Petrasso (York9 FC) — Barnet FC (England)

Barnet won 1-0 last Tuesday in a National League match against Weymouth, and Petrasso was an unused substitute. With quite a lot of time until their next match — an FA Cup qualifying tie with Leiston FC on Oct. 24 — the York9 winger could be involved this coming weekend now that he’s had time to settle in. Petrasso did appear in an interview with Barnet FC’s media team ahead of the Weymouth match, and he expressed his intentions to help the club attain promotion this season.

Nicholas Hamilton (York9 FC) — Dundee FC (Scotland)

Hamilton was not involved (or on the bench) in last Friday’s 6-2 loss against Hearts, Dundee’s first match of the Scottish Championship season. He’s been in training, though, and could feature on Saturday against Greenock Morton.

Julian Ulbricht (York9 FC) — 1. FC Phönix Lübeck (Germany)

It sounds like York9’s new German striker was involved in an exciting one over the weekend. He started for Lübeck in the Schleswig-Holstein Cup quarter-final against SV Frisia, and he exited in the 91st minute with the score tied at 2-2. The match proceeded all the way through extra time, though, and his side booked its ticket in the semifinals of the regional cup competition with a 5-4 penalty shootout win.

Next up for Ulbricht will be a match against Holstein II on Oct. 26.

Emil Gazdov (Pacific FC) — 1. FC Nürnberg (Germany)

Gazdov hasn’t yet featured for Nürnberg’s U-19 team, who drew 2-2 with Kaiserslautern on Saturday. The club has three goalkeepers listed on the U-19 squad, so Gazdov may well have to win his place in a match or two.

José Escalante (Cavalry FC) — CDS Vida (Honduras)

Vida shot up to second in their league table on Sunday with a massive 3-0 away win over Real España, with the help of Cavalry FC winger José Escalante.

Escalante also previously started last Wednesday in Vida’s 1-0 win over Real Sociedad (the Honduran version). It appears he’s making an impact with the club in his native country’s top flight.

José Galán (Valour FC) — CP Villarrobledo (Spain)

Galán was named to the bench for Villarrobledo’s 3-0 away loss to UD Melilla on Sunday, but he did not play in the game. The Spanish third-tier side will be back at it on Sunday against Socuéllamos, when Galán will hope to make his debut.

Viti Martínez (Atlético Ottawa) — Alavés B (Spain)

Martínez’s Alavés B side was scheduled to play Real Unión on Sunday, however the match was postponed due to a positive COVID-19 test (although it’s unclear if the positive was a player for Alavés or Unión).

Next up for the Alavés reserve squad is a match on Saturday, Oct. 24 against Arenas Club.
