OneSoccer: What’s next for CanMNT’s Jonathan David after Ligue 1 title?

Just a couple of days after Jonathan David helped Lille OSC capture the Ligue 1 title in France, the OneSoccer Today crew convened to break down the Canadian national team striker’s phenomenal season, as well as ponder what might be next for the 21-year-old.

After pointing out just how impressive the back half of David’s season was, with so many key goals in crucial league matches to push Lille to the top of the table, the panel of Andi Petrillo, Oliver Platt, and Gareth Wheeler discussed if it may already be time for David to move on from the club.

With quite a few names leaving Lille this summer — including head coach Christophe Galtier and sporting director Luis Campos — it’s possible that the French champions look to cash in on their young star and give him an opportunity to move up in the footballing world.

“Jonathan David, he’s still only 21; he’s still only had half a season, where he’s really been successful in this league,” Platt pointed out. “I think as a player he could benefit from another year at Lille, and I think Lille might look at it and say, ‘His value’s only gonna get bigger, so yes we could cash in on him now and it’ll help us, but he might be worth even more next summer or the summer after that.

“The question is, what does David think?”

The OneSoccer Today crew went on to discuss David’s rise to stardom and his popularity in Europe, as well as what all this club success could mean for the Canadian men’s national team.
