Pacific FC’s Marco Bustos on OneSoccer Hangout: MVP chances and CanMNT future

Pacific FC standout Marco Bustos joined OneSoccer’s Hangouts on Tuesday to discuss his Island Games performance, his future, and other hot topics.

The 24-year-old is up for the CPL Payer of the Year honour alongside Forge FC’s Kyle Bekker and HFX Wanderers FC’s Akeem Garcia. Bustos addressed questions about his MVP candidacy, telling hosts Adam Jenkins, Gareth Wheeler, and Oliver Platt he’d gladly vote for himself.

As for Pacific, which he joined this off-season, Bustos was impressed with the team’s second-round finish.

“You have to look at some of the positives and it’s about taking things forward into next season,” Bustos said. “On an individual note, I came in with a lot of confidence. During the shutdown, I stuck to my principles and going in knowing mentally I was ready for what was coming was satisfying.”

Bustos scored five goals and added three assists in PEI, as the Tridents finished the 2020 season with a 4-2-4 record.

Between Valour FC and Pacific, the attacking midfielder has missed just one match due to injury, with 3,098 minutes – fifth-most in CPL history – and 12 goals and six assists in two seasons.

As an MVP candidate, Bustos took questions about his chances to return to the Canadian men’s team fold.

“That’s been my goal for the past two years… get my name back in that category, those top 40 or 50 players,” Bustos said.

As for his professional future, Bustos stayed mum about moving away from Pacific FC.

“No one knows the future,” Bustos said. “I’ve really enjoyed my time here, it’s a top-class organization. The club sees me as a player who can play at a top-level – coaches and players.”
