HFX Wanderers are the first team to record points in the 2022 Canadian Premier League season, as they topped York United 1-0 at York Lions Stadium on Thursday night to put themselves in the win column immediately.
After a scoreless first half where both sides struggled to create dangerous opportunities, the Wanderers finally found the scoresheet a few minutes after halftime, thanks to Joao Morelli calmly scoring a penalty kick won by his teammate Cory Bent.
The hosts York pressed their opponents well in the final half hour of the match, spurred on by a raucous home crowd, but ultimately the goal did not fall for them as they left their first match of the year scoreless.
