Wanderers assistant coach Derek King is leaving the club to take a new coaching job with the national team of Trinidad and Tobago.

King, who was part of Stephen Hart’s original coaching staff for the CPL’s inaugural season, will be assistant to newly unveiled T & T head coach Terry Fenwick.

“It’s bittersweet but it’s a good opportunity and I am humbled and honoured to be given this chance,” said King.

Speaking from his home in Trinidad and Tobago, King said his time with the Wanderers in the Canadian Premier League has been special in Halifax.

“I would like to thank Stephen Hart for giving me the opportunity and to Wanderers President Derek Martin, Matt Fegan and all the staff, players and especially the fans because I felt at home  and I will miss you all and Halifax,” King said.

Stephen Hart said he’ll miss King being by his side in the dugout and on the training pitch but is excited for the impact he can make with the Soca Warriors.

“We’re disappointed in losing such an integral part of the staff. However, as a club we understand Derek’s situation and thoroughly support his decision,” Hart said. “He has a young family and being so far away from home is a massive sacrifice.”

King is actually moving back to the national team where he had a previous spell as a coach working alongside Stephen Hart.

As a player, he also made 33 appearances for T & T, scoring one goal.

While not returning to Halifax, King will maintain a strong connection to Halifax, with Wanderers striker Akeem Garcia having recently been called into the Soca Warriors national team set up.

“Halifax can always call on me,” King said.

The Wanderers would like to thank Derek for being a key part of the club’s first season and wish him every success with Trinidad and Tobago.
