York United FC to host opening match of 2024 CPL Playoffs on Wednesday. Oct. 23

Following the result of Saturday night’s match between Cavalry FC and Halifax Wanderers FC, it’s now confirmed that York United FC will finish fourth in the Canadian Premier League table this season, regardless of results in the last weekend of the season.

As the fourth-place side, York will therefore host the opening match of the 2024 CPL Playoffs. They will play whichever team finishes fifth at York Lions Stadium on Wednesday, Oct. 23, the winner of which will move on to play the third-place team the following weekend.

This will be the third playoff game in York United’s club history, but it will be the first time they’ve ever hosted a postseason match at York Lions Stadium. Last season, they were the fifth-place side and travelled to play Pacific FC in the fourth-versus-fifth game, losing 1-0.

The Nine Stripes don’t yet know who their opponent will be for that game, but it will be one of Pacific FC, Vancouver FC or Valour FC.

The Halifax Wanderers, after losing to Cavalry, are the first team to be officially eliminated from playoff contention in the CPL this season.
