York9 FC is moving on in the Canadian Championship after taking down PLSQ’s A.S. Blainville 1-0 in the second leg of their Round 1 tie Wednesday. Ryan Telfer’s 70th-minute goal was the difference for York9, who recorded their inaugural win in their first home match at York Lions Stadium.

Both teams enjoyed more chances than the reverse fixture in Montreal, which ended scoreless. Y9 came close to striking first in the opening half with a Telfer volley from the penalty spot. The home side continued to trouble their Quebecois opponents, who would advance with a 1-0 or 1-1 result.

Telfer would poke home the first goal of the tie in the 70th minute when Simon Adjei’s half volley was deflected and fell to the goalkeepers left. The midfielder got a toe to the ball, giving York9 the advantage and their first goal in front of their home fans.

Blainville pushed late on, installing a high line, but were unable to find a way back into the tie.

York9 FC will now play FC Edmonton in the CanChamp second round, with the first leg set for June 5 at York Lions Stadium.

In the meantime, Jimmy Brennan’s side will shift their attention to the 905 Derby and their league home opener against Forge FC on Saturday (4:00 p.m. ET/OneSoccer).

Ryan Telfer (York9 FC) – York9’s difference maker was part of a balanced midfield performance from Jimmy Brennan’s side. Quick to jump up and help out Adej, the on-loan Toronto FC product’s smart runs landed him a couple decent scoring chances, one of which he should have finished in the first half.

Luca Gasparotto (York9 FC) – Staring in a back four, Luca Gasparotto had more to do than in the middle of Y9’s typical back three. He held the clean sheet with ease, pumping out a few key clearances and organizing his defence well.

Wandrille Lefevre (Blainville) – Former national team member Wandrille Lefevre was effective just as he was in the first leg for the PLSQ side. Leading his team in touches (77), passes (57) and shots (three), the midfielder was a cut above his teammates.
