WATCH: Gattas nets first hat-trick in CPL history

It was a banner day for Rodrigo Gattas and York9 FC on Saturday.

The Chilean forward scored the first hat trick in Canadian Premier League history, putting three of Y9’s six goals on the day past HFX Wanderers goalkeeper Jan Michael Williams in a 6-2 win at York Lions Stadium.

The four-goal margin is also the largest in CPL history – with six the most one team has scored in a single match.

“If it wasn’t for [my teammates] I wouldn’t score the three goals,” Gattas said after the match, through a translator.

“Now I’m getting used to the players, the coach, the new system, I’m expecting to have many more good games.”

Gattas joined the party shortly after York9’s first marker from Ryan Telfer, scoring his side’s second with a well-taken half volley from around the penalty spot.

The Chilean added to his total 10 minutes later, picking out the far corner from well outside the penalty area with an incredible left-footed strike to make it 3-0. Gattas’ hat-trick marker came on the edge of halftime as he beat Williams again, this time by heading in a good cross from Manny Aparicio.

“Honestly, I didn’t expect Gattas to come out and outscore me,” Telfer admitted after the match. “It was fun being on the field.

“Who doesn’t enjoy goals?”

Gattas is now on four goals in league action with another two in the Canadian Championship.
