Michael Petrasso has written his name in Canadian Premier League history.
The Valour FC midfielder-turned-forward cemented his spot in the CPL’s record books on Saturday, scoring a consolatory goal in a 2-1 defeat to FC Edmonton from the spot – the very first goal ever scored from the first penalty ever drawn in the league.
Petrasso stepped up to the spot in the 86th minute of play, after his teammate, Diego Gutierrez, was brought down in the box by Edmonton’s Son Yongchan. The former QPR and Montreal Impact man beat goalkeeper Connor James by shooting to the left, spoiling his clean sheet with five minutes left in the match.
Sure, it wasn’t a glamorous first tally for the player, nor was it the sort of audacious ‘Panenka’ finish that earns plaudits, but a goal is a goal is a goal, and, in this case, a penalty is a penalty, now inscribed in future obscure ‘CPL trivia night’ lore.
