Atlético Ottawa adds Jamaican international Tevin Shaw to its midfield

Atlético Ottawa’s squad construction continued on Thursday with the announcement of Jamaican midfielder Tevin Shaw as their latest international signing.

With this move, Atlético Ottawa now has 10 players officially under contract for the 2020 CPL season.

Shaw is the club’s second international signing, after the announcement of Englishman Vashon Neufville on Tuesday.

He’ll join the likes of Ajay Khabra and Antoine Coupland in a central midfield that’s beginning to take shape in Ottawa.

“Becoming a part of the Atlético family is something I’m very excited about,” Shaw said.

“Becoming a part of the Canadian Premier League and getting an opportunity to play in front of the fans in Ottawa and the rest of Canada is something I am looking forward to.”

Shaw, a 23-year-old who’s played his entire career in his native country, recently suited up for Portmore United, the most successful club in Jamaica.

He made 21 appearances for Portmore in 2019-20, helping them to third place — where they were when the league suspended its season in March due to COVID-19.

Shaw also started for Portmore United in the second leg of their Concacaf Champions League round-of-16 tie against Mexican outfit Cruz Azul at the Estadio Azteca in late February, his first appearance in the continental tournament.

Prior to joining Portmore for the most recent season, Shaw spent three years at Tivoli Gardens, for whom he made 85 appearances in Jamaica’s top flight. His first pro side was Boys’ Town, also in the Jamaican Premier League.

Shaw has also represented his country at the senior level. He appeared in six international friendlies in 2018, including games against South Korea and Ecuador.

“He is a very skilled defensive midfielder that will bring to the team a wide range of possibilities. He is able to high pressure opponents, make smart tackles, recover balls and move the team sideline to sideline with quality and precise crossings,” Atlético Ottawa CEO  Fernando Lopez said.

Shaw signed with Ottawa after being identified by the CPL’s centralized scouting system of young internationals (age 23 and under), which is run by the league’s soccer operations department and the 21st Club, a world class data and analytics group with offices in London, San Francisco and Singapore.
