Canada to face England as pre-World Cup schedule takes shape

Canada’s road to this summer’s World Cup goes through Manchester.

Canada Soccer announced Tuesday its women’s national team will take on England on April 5 in Manchester as a key tune-up for the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup in France.

The match, which will be played at Manchester City’s Academy Stadium, is set to be the first international meeting between the two sides since England knocked Canada out of the quarterfinal stage at the 2015 World Cup.

England and Canada were recently ranked fourth and fifth respectively in the FIFA Women’s World Rankings.

“This will be an important match for us as we will have the chance to test ourselves against one of the best national teams in the world,” head coach Kenneth Heiner-Møller said. “We are facing a tier-one opponent that are contenders to win the World Cup.”

Heiner-Møller and co. started their road to the 2019 World Cup with a 1-0 win over Norway in January.

Along with preparing for the FIFA Women’s World Cup this summer in France, Heiner-Møller will also be looking towards the Algarve Cup, which starts later this month.

Canada has been drawn in a group with Iceland and Scotland. Canada won the Algarve Cup in 2016 and placed second in 2017.

Canada’s women will face Cameroon, New Zealand and the Netherlands in the group stage at next summer’s World Cup.
