York United FC managing consultant Angus McNab joined OneSoccer Today on Tuesday to review the club’s rebrand, how York plans to connect with the Greater Toronto Area soccer market, and more
McNab spearheaded the club’s identity change, which was unveiled Friday, dropping York9 FC and its colours for a “historic-feeling” crest with inspiration taken outside of York Region.

McNab explained the rebrand, saying it was “more than just a crest” to the only Canadian Premier League club based in the Greater Toronto Area.
“We don’t just compete in a saturated soccer market, it’s the most difficult entertainment market in the country,” McNab began.
“We have to look at how we’re connecting with people. The rebrand was more than a crest – following on our identity, mission and values, and finding our niche in the marketplace.”

York United’s crest is inspired by elements from Toronto, which was formerly known as the “City of York,” while the additions of blue and gold mark a major change in the club’s colour scheme from the neon green and charcoal of its first two seasons.
McNab has said the design was mean to bring “a new community” to York Lions Stadium in 2021, something he explained to OneSoccer’s Andi Petrillo.
“We didn’t offer enough to fans as an incentive in year one,” McNab said. “We have to truly welcome people in before we make an ask of them
“There is a phenomenally passionate and committed soccer community within the GTA and York Region, we need to connect on a much deeper, meaningful level… We want to be the window to fandom.”
