York9 FC signs CPL-U SPORTS Draft pick Daniel Gogarty

York9 FC announced Monday the club has signed defender Daniel Gogarty to a professional contract, bringing on the fourth overall pick in the 2018 CPL-U SPORTS Draft.

The 6-foot-2 centre-back brings experience playing for the York U Lions, where he made 68 appearances over five seasons. He adds depth to a backline that also includes Roger Thompson and Steven Furlano.

“We’ve known Gogarty for a while. Right away we knew he was going to be the guy for us,” York9 FC Head Coach Jimmy Brennan said. “Our staff is really familiar with him and we’ve watched him numerous times.

“He has good size and a good presence at the back. He’s a good leader. That’s what we want — a good left-footed Canadian centreback who can control a back line and be a difference.”

Gogarty is excited to be joining York9 FC, having come through the inaugural CPL-U SPORTS Draft with the first-ever pick in club history.

“I think it’ll be a super-smooth transition,” Gogarty said. “I’m already used to the commute and I’m used to playing on the field and (York9 FC assistant and York U head coach) Carmine Isaaco will be there, so I’m really looking forward to it.

“I feel like I can be a calming presence, without getting too caught up in the moment. I try to always think the game, and stay composed on the ball and keep my teammates involved.

With those traits in mind, Brennan sees the 22-year-old having what it takes to “come straight into the team.”

“There are certain players you look at who have the right characteristics,” Brennan said. “This game is all about winning at the senior level and he has a good mentality. He doesn’t like to lose. He’s the type of guy who I see fitting in with us right away.”
