York9 FC followed up Monday’s batch of re-signings with another pair of additions on Tuesday with the inking of defender Roger Thompson and midfielder Emilio Estevez to deals through 2020.
Thompson, 27, spent most of the 2019 season for York9 out injured before returning to amass 801 minutes across 10 appearances in the backline. From Brampton, Ont., by way of Jamaica, the two-footed, six-foot-three centre back is set to play a bigger role for Y9 in 2020, if he stays healthy.
Estevez, 21, was signed by the club after taking part in the #GotGame Open Trials, and made 21 appearances in York9’s inaugural season as a shifty attack-minded midfielder. He also made his international debut in 2019 for Chinese Taipei, appearing in three FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Australia, Kuwait, & Jordan, playing 90 minutes in the latter two.

“Roger and Emilio are going to be huge parts of next season,” York9 FC coach Jimmy Brennan said. “Emilio is a kid that caught my attention the second I saw him at the #GotGame Open Trials in 2018. He’s got so much talent and I’m really looking forward to helping him develop that.
“Roger is an important part of our backline. He brings a big presence, both physically and as a leader, and the difference he makes for us when he’s on the field is staggering.”
Estevez and Thompson join goalkeeper Colm Vance, defensive midfielder Joseph Di Chiara, and winger Kyle Porter as the latest group of York9 re-signings, for a total of 11 from the club’s inaugural roster returning for 2020.
The club also added two players at the CPL-U SPORTS Draft with the selections of Carleton University striker Stefan Karajovanovic (fifth overall) and Cape Breton midfielder Isaiah Johnston (10th overall).
