Some things change, some stay the same.
Draws and penalties featured heavily during the second week of the Canadian Premier League’s 2020 season. A total of nine penalties have come from 13 matches thus far, while an incredible seven draws have left the standings very tight.
Notably, Atlético Ottawa’s dream start against York9 FC last week has been quickly forgotten thanks to some brutal second-half defensive performances.
Valour, meanwhile, is one of three sides with a win after landing at the bottom of last week’s power rankings.
So, with CPL teams chopping and changing spots, here are CanPL.ca’s second power rankings from The Island Games.

1. Cavalry FC
MOVEMENT: –
Last week: No. 1
Record: 3-1-0
The Cavs have been excellent thus far, earning two wins last week to all-but-confirm a spot in the second round. It’s been all-encompassing for Tommy Wheeldon Jr.’s men: A straight-forward Al Classico win over FC Edmonton and a hearty battle and victory against HFX Wanderers left the side with four goals scored and just one against (a late penalty against HFX).
Upcoming Matches: Atlético Ottawa (Thursday, 8pm ET). Pacific FC (Sunday, 12pm ET).
2. Forge FC
MOVEMENT: –
Last week: No. 2
Record: 2-2-0
Forge never quits. Kyle Bekker’s run into the box and inspiring last-gasp winner shocked Pacific on the weekend. It was the type of response that Bobby Smyrniotis expected after his team’s exhausting draw with HFX Wanderers.
Upcoming Matches: York9 FC (Wednesday, 1pm ET), Atlético Ottawa (Sunday, 3pm ET).
3. Valour FC
MOVEMENT: +5
Last week: No. 8
Record: 1-1-1
Back-to-back clean sheets prove Valour FC is a much more stable unit at the back compared to Year 1. Julian Dunn and Andrew Jean-Baptiste have emerged as one of the best centre back pairings, with OneSoccer pundit Carmelina Moscato calling them “impenetrable at times.” A four-goal output against Atlético Ottawa was equally impressive (even against 10 men), as was its 0-0 draw with York9.
Upcoming Matches: Pacific FC (Tuesday, 8pm ET), FC Edmonton (Saturday, 12pm ET).
4. Pacific FC
MOVEMENT: –
Last week: No. 4
Record: 0-2-1
We have the Tridents in a playoff spot despite a disappointing week. A late goal saw them snatch a point from York9, only for them to lose to Forge via a late goal on Saturday. Credit where it’s due: PFC out-played Forge at times, going “toe to toe with the champions,” as coach Pa-Modou Kah put it. They are better than these results show.
Upcoming Matches: Valour FC (Wednesday, 8pm ET), Cavalry FC (Sunday, 12pm ET).
5. HFX Wanderers FC
MOVEMENT: +2
Last week: No. 7
Record: 0-2-1
Stephen Hart’s side has finished the CPL’s “gauntlet” at The Island Games – back-to-back matches against Forge and Cavalry – with solid grades. Fantastic individual fight against Forge ensured a draw, while Sunday’s encounter showed a dedicated Wanderers side can take the Cavs head-on.
Upcoming Matches: FC Edmonton (Wednesday, 8pm ET), York9 FC (Saturday, 3pm ET).
6. York9 FC
MOVEMENT: -1
Last week: No. 5
Record: 0-3-0
Three draws from three matches for Jimmy Brennan’s side, who sit on the outside of a top-four spot. The Nine Stripes were evenly matched with Valour FC and Pacific FC last week, failing to make much happening going forward. That should be the focus for Y9, who now faces the mighty Forge FC.
Upcoming Matches: Forge FC (Wednesday, 1pm ET), HFX Wanderers FC (Saturday, 3pm ET).
7. Atlético Ottawa
MOVEMENT: -4
Last week: No. 3
Record: 0-2-1
Late second-half implosions will leave Ottawa coach Mista with lots to ponder this week. A ten-man onslaught from Valour and two-goal lead evaporating against FC Edmonton has Ottawa players and fans frustrated. There are some positives, though – Acuna’s record-setting brace chief among them.
Upcoming Matches: Cavalry FC (Thursday, 8pm ET), Forge FC (Sunday, 3pm ET).
8. FC Edmonton
MOVEMENT: -2
Last week: No. 2
Record: 0-1-2
The Eddies drop two spots after an underwhelming week, which started with a 2-0 loss to Cavalry in Al Classico. A two-goal comeback over Ottawa came agonizingly late, as Jeff Paulus’ side scored their first goals of the tournament, and grabbed their first point. Wins need to come quickly for FCE.
Upcoming Matches: HFX Wanderers FC (Wednesday, 8pm ET). Valour FC (Saturday, 12pm ET).
